  1. The Battle of Hastings 1066, this is the 
  2. battle that made Norman invaders the
  3. masters of England. WILLIAM_THE_CONQUEROR
  4. sailed with 7000 Norman troops and some war
  5. horses from France to England in 450 open
  6. boats. Meanwhile the English (anglo saxons)
  7. under King Harold were defeating Norse 
  8. invaders in Northern England. 
  9. King Harold marched south, and fought William
  10. at Senlac, near Hastings. The Anglo Saxons
  11. defended a hilltop with axes, spears, swords
  12. and shields. The Normans attacked with 
  13. arrows, lances, spiked clubs and swords. 
  14. The battle lasted for one day. The Normans
  15. then pretended to run away. A small number of
  16. Anglo Saxons followed, then the Normans 
  17. showered arrows on the them and the rest and
  18. attacked once more. By evening, King Harold
  19. was dead and his army had been beaten. 
  20. By the year 1071, William The Conqueror had
  21. subdued all of England. Since then, no 
  22. foreign army has landed and won a battle on
  23. English soil.
